Medical Cosmetics

Improving skin health, hydration and texture through professional treatments tailored to individual skin needs.

Individually coordinated treatments support healthy skin and improve skin quality, hydration and texture. Healthy skin does not always need intensive treatment. Dryness, blemishes, an irregular skin texture, enlarged-looking pores, or a dull complexion can often be improved with targeted cosmetic and regenerative treatments. At Clinic Selnau in Zürich, we therefore do not view medical cosmetics as a standardised facial treatment. The starting point is the current condition of the skin. Based on this, we select treatments and active ingredients that suit the skin and the respective treatment goal. These include HydraFacial, chemical peels, microneedling, and individually coordinated medical facial treatments.

Our Approach

Skin changes.

Season, sun exposure, hormonal influences, skincare, stress, and aesthetic or medical treatments can influence its condition. For this reason, the same skin does not need the same treatment at every point in time.

We assess skin quality, hydration, the skin barrier, sebum production, blemishes, and texture, and decide on this basis which treatment makes sense. A single treatment can be the main focus, or a longer-term skin concept can develop.

It is not the treatment that determines what the skin needs. The condition of the skin determines which treatment makes sense.

Skin Analysis & Treatment Planning

At the start comes an assessment of the skin. We consider, among other things:

  • Skin type and skin condition
  • Hydration and skin barrier
  • Sebum production and blemishes
  • Pores and skin texture
  • Pigmentation and redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Previous skincare routine
  • Previous aesthetic or dermatological treatments

Your personal goal also plays a role. Some patients wish primarily for more hydration and a fresher-looking complexion. For others, blemishes, texture, pores, or early signs of skin ageing are the main concern. An individually coordinated treatment concept is developed from this.

HydraFacial

HydraFacial combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and intensive hydration within one treatment.

The focus is on a cleansed, hydrated, and fresher-looking complexion, as well as comparatively short recovery time. The treatment can be performed as a single session, or integrated regularly into a long-term skincare concept. Which treatment steps and care components make sense is selected according to the current condition of the skin.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels allow for controlled exfoliation and skin renewal with carefully selected active ingredients.

Depending on composition and intensity, they can be used to improve skin texture, clarity, blemishes, and an uneven complexion. The strongest peel, however, is not automatically the most effective. Skin type, skin condition, and treatment goal determine which type and intensity make sense.

Microneedling

With microneedling, controlled fine micro-channels are created in the skin.

This stimulates the body's own repair and remodelling processes. The treatment can be used in particular for irregular skin texture, fine lines, enlarged-looking pores, and selected superficial scars. Unlike a classic facial treatment, the focus here is less on immediate care and more on the regenerative stimulation of the skin.

Medical Facial Treatments

Not every skin needs a fixed, predefined treatment system.

In our medical facial treatments, the individual steps are assembled according to the current condition of the skin. These can include cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extraction, hydration, soothing care, and individually selected active ingredients.

The treatment can be performed as regular care or be part of a more comprehensive skin concept. Particularly for sensitive, blemish-prone, or changing skin, this approach allows treatment to be repeatedly readjusted to the current condition.

Which Treatment Suits My Skin?

The different treatments within medical cosmetics pursue different goals.

HydraFacial is particularly suited to cleansing, hydration, and a fresher-looking complexion. Chemical peels allow for controlled exfoliation and skin renewal at varying intensity. Microneedling generates a targeted regenerative stimulus and can improve skin texture, fine lines, pores, and selected scars. Medical facial treatments allow for a flexible combination of cleansing, care, and individually selected treatment steps.

None of these treatments is inherently better than the others. What matters is what the skin needs at the respective time.

For deeper regenerative needs that go beyond the skin's surface, injectable biostimulators follow a different treatment principle and are considered separately.

Medical Cosmetics or Laser?

Cosmetic and laser-based treatments fulfil different roles.

Medical cosmetics is particularly suited to supporting skin quality, hydration, the skin barrier, and superficial skin structure. Certain, clearly defined skin changes, by contrast, can be treated more precisely with specialised technologies.

With pigmentation & pigment spots, for example, a pigment-targeted treatment can make sense. Redness & vascular laser targets selected vascular changes. For more pronounced scars & acne scars, or structural signs of skin ageing, laser skin resurfacing may be considered.

Not every skin change needs a laser. At the same time, medical cosmetics cannot replace a targeted laser treatment in every situation.

Combination With Skin & Laser

Medical cosmetics can be used to complement treatments from skin & laser.

This is not about performing as many techniques as possible at the same time. Depending on the starting point, it can make sense to first prepare the skin, support it between device-based treatments, or care for it long-term once regeneration is complete. Timing is decisive here — the skin should be given sufficient time to regenerate between more intensive treatments.

Skincare Between Treatments

Professional treatments are only one part of a long-term skin concept.

Daily skincare, too, influences the skin barrier, hydration, and overall appearance. More is not automatically better. Too many active ingredients, or overly aggressive care, can further burden particularly sensitive skin.

For this reason, we also consider the existing skincare routine and discuss which products and active ingredients suit the respective skin situation. Good skincare does not mean as many products as possible. It means giving the skin what it actually needs.

Before & After Aesthetic Treatments

The condition of the skin can also be relevant in connection with other aesthetic treatments.

Depending on the planned procedure, a preparatory treatment can make sense. Following more intensive aesthetic or device-based techniques, by contrast, the skin should be given sufficient time to regenerate before cosmetic treatments resume. Which treatment makes sense at which point in time depends on the preceding procedure and individual healing progress. The different treatment steps are therefore coordinated with one another.

Single Treatment or Long-Term Skin Concept?

Not every skin goal requires a long-term treatment series.

A HydraFacial or a medical facial treatment, for example, can be performed as a single targeted session. Other goals develop more sensibly over several sessions. This applies in particular to regenerative techniques such as microneedling or certain chemical peels.

For long-term skincare, treatments and intervals can additionally be adapted to the season and current skin condition.

The aim is not a rigid treatment plan. It is to observe the skin over time and adapt treatment accordingly.

Long-Term Skin Quality

Skin changes continuously.

Ageing processes, sun exposure, hormonal influences, lifestyle, and individual predisposition influence its quality. Medical cosmetics cannot prevent these processes. It can, however, help support the skin barrier, hydration, texture, and overall skin appearance long-term.

In combination with consistent sun protection and suitable daily care, this can result in a long-term skin concept. The aim is not flawless skin. It is healthy, well-cared-for skin whose natural character is preserved.

Consultation

During your personal consultation at Clinic Selnau in Zürich, we assess your skin and discuss which skin needs are the primary concern for you.

On this basis, we decide whether HydraFacial, chemical peels, microneedling, or an individually coordinated medical facial treatment make sense. Where clearly defined pigmentation, vascular changes, scars, or more pronounced structural changes exist, we additionally check whether a treatment from skin & laser is more suitable.

Here, in particular, pigmentation & pigment spots, redness & vascular laser, scars & acne scars, or laser skin resurfacing can be relevant.

We discuss the treatment goal, possible sessions, recovery time, skincare, and sensible combination with other aesthetic treatments.

The aim is not to perform as many treatments as possible. It is to understand what your skin needs, and to develop a sensible treatment concept from this.
